LGR Posts Impressive Spring Results

Spring LGR programs came to a successful end with graduation ceremonies in May. 638 high school students (over half of whom are first-generation college-bound) met in small groups with 298 volunteer Coaches in the nine-week programs. Participants (mainly high school juniors) increased their SAT scores by an average of 114 points, and they reported an increase in their knowledge of the college process and in their ability to get to college.

Spring Program Highlights:

  • The Columbia LGR program at Frederick Douglass Academy included 46 students who, on average, increased their SAT scores by 120 points and completed 86% of all College Choice activities.
  • The Harvard LGR program at the Boston Higher Education Resource Center included 41 students who, on average, increased their SAT scores by 210 points and completed 91% of all College Choice activities.
  • On Thursday, April 16th, NBC Universal hosted 16 LGR high school students at their New York City headquarters. The LGR students (all males) went on a tour of the studios and learned about the broadcasting industry and business from a wide range of senior NBC employees.
  • The Penn LGR program was featured as part of a presentation by AT&T regarding its charitable giving in Philadelphia. The ceremony at Sayre High School included leaders from the University of Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia schools and the Mayor of Philadelphia.
