“I was excited to get to work directly with students, especially in a mentor role… I have learned so much from the students as well and it’s really helped me figure out what I want to do in life overall.”

- Tiffany Ellison, LGR Success Coach and Student Leadership Council Member

Let's Get Ready's program is built around our near-peer coaching model, in which current college students serve as paid mentors to younger high school and college students. Our coaches build meaningful relationships with students, and support them through the social, academic, and financial challenges and opportunities that arise as they pursue their college degrees. But this relationship is not a one way street; for many of our coaches, this is their first professional work experience and in addition to earning money to help pay for school and other expenses, they receive significant workforce development and leadership training.

Additionally, the vast majority of our coaches have either gone through LGR programs and/or come from similar backgrounds and communities as our students, and they report feeling an immense sense of pride and empowerment at the opportunity to serve as a coach and be a leader for the students coming up behind them. Many - like Tiffany, whom you’ll meet in the video below - are so inspired by their experience as an LGR coach that they go on to careers in education and public service.

Our coaches are the heart of LGR's programs and we could not do what we do without their passion, dedication, and hard work. Watch the video to meet Tiffany and learn more about her experience as an LGR coach.

Let’s Get Ready students graduate at DOUBLE the rate of their peers from similar backgrounds.

Let’s Get Ready’s mission is to increase the accessibility of a college degree by helping students from underrepresented college-going backgrounds get into and through college. To do this, LGR addresses disparities in pre- and post-college matriculation support by employing near-peer mentors to help students navigate academic, social, and financial challenges. Through an innovative program model that stands apart from other college access and success programs, LGR currently serves more than 16,000 students annually. There is no nomination process or academic requirements for participation in LGR programs. Any student who expresses interest is eligible for services, with students from low-income backgrounds or who are first-generation-to-college given priority.

Let’s Get Ready envisions a future when students from all socioeconomic backgrounds have the support they need to attain a college education. LGR’s program is built around our near-peer coaching model, and the majority of our coaches have either gone through LGR programs and/or come from similar backgrounds and communities as our students.

As graduation season approaches and the LGR team continues  to introduce you to our community members, we also encourage you to check out our earlier posts to meet Elvis and Ishrat (an LGR student and coach) and Andrea (an LGR alum).  We hope you’ll also connect with us on social media, share these messages with your friends, family, and networks, and consider investing in LGR’s programs and our students!

As we approach our 25th anniversary and plan for major growth over the next few years, we’re looking back and reflecting on how LGR has grown and evolved. But one thing has remained the same - our program model has always focused on “near-peer mentoring”, harnessing the wisdom and power of young people to positively impact those around them.

Let’s Get Ready has served almost 45,000 high school and college students over the past 24 years and many of them have gone on to do incredible things and have pursued careers in education, public service, medicine, and law - like Andrea!

Check out the video to meet Andrea and learn more.

To every member of the LGR community who has been part of the journey so far - students, coaches, parents, alumni, partners, donors, volunteers, and staff - thank you!! We could not have done it without you, and we hope you’ll join us in the work ahead, as we strive to serve 25,000 students per year by 2025!

As LGR nears our 25th anniversary, we’re excited to announce that we are growing and will serve 25,000 students per year by 2025!

Over the next few weeks, as graduation season approaches, the LGR team is excited to introduce you to our community members and partners, and share more about our exciting growth plans. We hope you’ll connect with us on social media, share these messages with your friends, family, and networks, and consider investing in LGR’s programs and our students.

Meet Elvis and Ishrat!

Elvis - Columbia ‘23 - is a coach in LGR’s Success Program and Ishrat - NYU ‘24 - is an LGR student and serves on our Student Leadership Council. They got together recently in LGR’s office in NYC to reflect on how the program has impacted each of them and why they’re excited about LGR growing to serve more students.

Elvis and Ishrat are two of the 16,000+ students and coaches who work with LGR every year to achieve their dreams of earning a college degree. Our unique program model is built around “near-peer mentoring”; we pair current college students (who serve as coaches) with high school and college students for support and guidance as they navigate the complex path to and through college.
